Audrey Anna Torrero was born in Panama on November 13,
1932. She was the only child born to Maria and Leonard Henry.
She married Lewin Murrell in 1947 and from this union bore three
children. After the dissolution of her marriage to Lewin, she met
and married Francisco Torrero.
Audrey immigrated to the United States in 1959 and began
working as a nanny. With determination and the support of her
aunts, Audrey Hay and Augustine Duverney, she was able to
reunite her family in the United States in 1962. She sent for her
three daughters, Leticia, Pamela, and Debora, her mother, Maria
Henry, and her grandmother, Philomena Murrell, and together
they began building a new life.
In 1962, Audrey began working at St Vincent’s Hospital as an
Operating Room Technician. In 1973 she passed the test to
become a certified Surgical Technician, making history as the first
woman of color to earn that distinction at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
She joined the Cardiac unit in the operating room and was a
beloved member of the team. After 37 years of dedicated service,
she retired.
After retirement, Audrey enjoyed traveling and spending time with
her family. Her life was anchored in faith, family, and service. In
1993 she joined St. Charles Borromeo Church and became an
active member. She was an active participant in the Sanctuary
Choir and served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a
member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Altar Rosary
Society, the Catholic Women of Harlem, and a Lady of the
Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher.
