Barbara Ann Stewart was born on February 26, 1939, to Mary Bell Shell and Evan Swain in New York, New York. She was an only child and a very special gift to her parents. Barbara completed the 12th grade with honors at James Solomon Russell High School in Lawrenceville, Virginia. She divided her time between her parents in New York and her grandparents in Virginia upon graduation.
Barbara began her spiritual journey at a young age, nurtured by her grandparents. She found joy in singing the Gospel, reading the Bible, and attending church with them every Sunday. Her love for learning about God and his teachings remained a constant in her life, and she always thanked Him for food and shelter through prayer. Barbara eventually became a devoted member missionary of Saint John’s Baptist Church in Harlem, New York where she found belonging in a loving church family and continued praising God through the beautiful voice that He blessed her with.
Barbara married Roland Stewart in 1959. This union welcomed three daughters, Elisa Stewart, Noretha Stewart, and René Stewart-Pearce. Barbara worked as a Home Health Aide for the City of New York for over 18 years to support her family. She retired from full-time work after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2008. Barbara continued to work in healthcare part-time for Mount Sinai Hospital for less than a year thereafter. She was committed to ensuring all of her patients felt seen, heard, and cared for.
Barbara always kept her faith that God would continue to take care of her and her family throughout her life. She is survived by all of her daughters; grandson, Marsalis Pearce; son-in-law, Craig Pearce; grand-dog, Benny Pearce; and an abundance of extended family and friends from all over. Barbara undeniably touched the lives of many, and she will be eternally celebrated for her unwavering lovingkindness and respect for everyone.
