Beatrice Yvonne Hunt was born in Danville, Virginia to the proud parents of the late Olivia and Harry Linden Baines on June 5, 1940. She was the third of four
children born to that union. She departed this life on Monday, November 24, 2025.
Sister Hunt was a woman of remarkable determination, strength, and willpower—and she expected no less from those closest to her. She was a proud mother, and a loving and devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She touched countless lives through her humor, warmth, creativity, curiosity, and outgoing spirit. Known for her generosity and her unique ability to connect with anyone, Beatrice cultivated lifelong relationships wherever she went.
She was educated in the Virginia school system and later moved to New York. She attended ABC Nursing School in the Bronx, where she earned her medical certificate as a Home Health Aide. Sister Hunt faithfully served the New York City community for more than 30 years.
She met the love of her life, her husband, Dorsey Hunt Sr. From this union came six children: Timmy, Sharon, James, Ricardo, and the twins Barry and Beverly. From a later union came her daughter, Renee Yolanda Hunt.
Humble in spirit and sincere in faith, Sister Hunt accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. On the first Sunday of 2007, after attending the Watch Night Celebration, she and her family joined the Congregational Church of God under the pastorship of Reverend J-Anthony Dargan. Sister Hunt became an active and enthusiastic member, faithfully serving in the A.C.T.I.O.N. Ministry—participating in weekly food distribution, street witnessing, clothing drives, and
community engagements such as “Have Fun with Clifford the Big Red Dog.” She also served proudly in the Senior Choir, the Kitchen Committee, Sunday School, the 7 AM Prayer Conference Call, the Helping Hands Ministry, and the Visitation Ministry—both home and nursing home outreach. Every time the church doors were open, or the congregation was ministering in the community, Sister Hunt was joyfully and faithfully present.
She deeply loved her church and especially her pastor, who affectionately called her “Big Momma,” a nickname lovingly inspired by her children and grandchildren. Following COVID, Sister Hunt’s health began to decline, and she was no longer able to attend in person. Yet her love for her church and her unwavering faith remained strong.
Sister Hunt’s friendly and outgoing personality made her unforgettable. She had the rare gift of making people feel seen, loved, and valued. She will be remembered as loving, caring, thoughtful, and deeply cherished by her family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her. She will truly never be forgotten.
Sister Hunt was preceded in death by her brothers, Harry L. Baines Jr. and Royal Baines; her daughters, Sharon Stewart and Beverly Peden; and three grandchildren, Sharnise R. Hunt, Josette R. Richardson, and Barry E. Richardson.
Sister Beatrice Yvonne Hunt leaves to cherish her memory: one brother, Conrad Baines of Hampton, VA; three sons, Timmy Hunt Sr. (Newport News, VA), Barry Hunt (Panama City, FL), and James Hunt (New York); one daughter, Renee Hunt (New York); grandchildren, LáShea, Kevin, Marshee, Ronnista, Rick Jr., Jasmine, Kiesha, Rachene, LaShonda, Tanya, Latisha, Beverly, Cindy, Ashanti, Timmy Jr., Chaz, Damon, David, Dajuan, and James; 47 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; three special daughters, Glenda Hicks, Ardelia Deeble, and Daphne Hunt; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, friends, and many beloved neighbors.
"Her light, her laughter, and her love will live on in all of us"
