Frederick “Freddie” Rice was born on March 10, 1928, to the late John
and Evelyn Rice in Barbados, West Indies. From this union, he was one
of five sons along with Chandler, Hubert, Conrad, and Wallace.
Freddie left Barbados in his early twenties to pursue a life in the
United States. After numerous stops in other states and several jobs,
he eventually settled down in Harlem, New York. There he met Ruby
Skerritt (predeceased) at a dance sponsored by the Sons and Daughters
of Barbados. Soon after, they wed in Barbados and returned to the
Bronx, New York and started their family. From this union, four
sons were born: Ian (predeceased), Lionel, Curtis (predeceased), and
Terrance. Freddie brought his nephew Anthony “Tony” Lowe to live with
his family who became like another son and a brother to his children.
Freddie is preceded in death by his parents (John and Evelyn), his
wife (Ruby), two of his sons (Ian and Curtis), Marlyn (Star) Issac, his
four brothers (Chandler, Hubert, Conrad, and Wallace), aunts, uncles,
sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and good friends.
Freddie leaves behind two of his sons: Lionel, Sr. (wife: Terona Cooper-
Rice) and Terrance; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren:
Xavier (son of Kim Rice and father to Ayden), Ianna (daughter of
Jacqueline and mother to Amir), and Lionel Jr. “Scooter” (son of Robin
Payton, married to Olivia Rice, and father to Leon and soon to be Leon’s
sister Lana due in June), a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended
family and friends throughout New York, California, and Barbados.
