Iris Washington was born on January 26, 1959 in Maysville, North Carolina to Donnie and Celia Boomer. She was the oldest of four daughters.
Iris's life was defined by her warmth, compassion, and elegance. She was raised in Maysville and moved to New York City where she created a beautiful life with her beloved husband John, whom she married on January 31, 1979. Together, they raised five wonderful boys who were her pride and joy, and their legacy continues through a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Iris’s love for her family was boundless and evident in every interaction, every smile, and every gesture.
Iris was known for her unique sense of style and grace, always carrying herself with dignity. She was particularly famous for her impressive collection of shades and floral arrangements; each pair of shades and floral arrangement was a reflection of her vibrant personality and love for fashion. She made an impression wherever she went, and her presence was both comforting and inspiring.
She was a devoted Christian and member of Franklin Ave Baptist Church.
Iris lived her life in service to others and was a strong pillar of faith in her community. She was deeply involved in church activities, offering support and kindness to everyone she encountered. Her spiritual strength and devotion to her faith were sources of guidance for those who knew her. She brought that same commitment to her community. Iris and John were known for bringing everyone together for their world’s famous cookouts in St Mary’s Park.
Iris held numerous positions in New York City. Everywhere she worked her coworkers became family. She was employed by CIT and the United States Postal Services before finding her niche in the healthcare field at the New York Downtown Hospital. Another one of her special group of friends are her Soul Sisters. The Soul Sisters gather together to travel and celebrate each other’s birthdays. Iris’s impact on the world was immeasurable, and her legacy will live on in the lives she touched.
Iris is survived by her loving mother, Celia Boomer; devoted husband, Legion “John” Washington; three sisters, Donna Boomer, Felicia Boomer, Natasha Outlaw (Rudy); five children, John Washington (Thresica), Hannibal Washington (Ragan), Jaquan Washington (Hiedi), Terrell Washington (Tiffany) and Durrell Washington (Nicole), twelve grand & great children, three nephews, three god-daughters, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, and a wide circle of friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.
“We will miss her laughter, her wisdom, and her unwavering love. Iris's spirit will live on in the memories we cherish, and we find comfort in knowing that she is now at peace”.
