Margaret Jean Carpenter was born on October 26, 1938, in Kilmichael,
Mississippi in the county of Montgomery to Calvin and Hattie Williams (deceased). She was the
oldest of three children from that union. Margaret’s brothers are Henry and Hardy Williams.
During the early 1950’s, Margaret joined the Mount Zion Methodist Church in Kilmichael,
Mississippi where she faithfully served, sang in the church choir, and was often called to sing
solo. Margaret was a lover of gospel music and the hymns. She always had a great passion for
singing.
Margaret attended Mount Zion Elementary School and Mount Zion High School in Kilmichael,
Mississippi. After graduating from high school in 1958, Margaret moved to New York City by
invitation from her beloved Uncle Wayne and Aunt Georgia Williams which would begin a new
chapter in her life.
She began worshiping with Uncle Wayne and Aunt Georgia at Brooks Memorial United
Methodist Church in Queens, NY. She loved being around her cousins Wayne Jr., Carl, and Eva
Williams. During her membership at Brooks, Margaret belonged to Commission on Mission and
the Membership Committee.
While working at S. Kleins in Long Island, NY. She met and married her partner, Vernon
Carpenter Jr. To this union was born their beautiful daughter Theresa Luvenue and loving sons
Marshal, Michael Dion, and Dewayne. She taught her children the importance of being civically
responsible and active in their community and church. Margaret was a doting and proud
mother—not only to her own children, but to many family members and neighbors. She was a
well-known “neighborhood Mom.” Margaret was active in the Guy R. Brewer Democrat Club, a
PTA parent, and served on the election committee and poll worker of the Southeastern District of
Queens for many years. As the neighborhood mom, she became the caregiver to countless future
leaders and inspired them all. She marveled at their success and experienced overwhelming joy
when she learned of a new accomplishment.
Margaret loved the Lord and instilled the love of God in her family. Prior to her illness, Margaret
was in regular church attendance at Brooks. She could always be found supporting Carl & Eva’s
Voices of Hope concerts and following her son Marshal’s music career with the Voices of Spirit.
Once confined to homecare, Margaret was always watching or listening to the Word of God and
her gospel music on the radio or television and in her later days, online! She found great joy in
having Dewayne put on her favorite church services as she enjoyed seeing her children and
grandchildren serve in ministry! Margaret’s faith sustained her and our family through all trials
and tribulations. She never judged and always had an open mind. Margaret was a confidante to
many and touched even more with her love and generosity.
On Tuesday, December 6 th , 2022, at 5:19 p.m. God decided to call Margaret home while at the
Brandywine Hospice in Melville, New York.
She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory: her beloved husband, Vernon Carpenter of Queens,
NY; four children, daughter Theresa Cousins (Robert), sons Marshal Carpenter (Sheila), Michael
Carpenter (Laurie) and Dewayne Carpenter, who along with Dad were her primary caregivers at
home; brothers, Henry Williams (Carrie) and Hardy Williams (Barbara); cousins (but more like
