“ALL HAIL THE QUEEN”
Tunishia Ramaine Murray, affectionately known as “Nitchia,” was born on December 7, 1961, in New York City to her loving parents, John Murray and Prettina Murray. Her mother, Prettina, preceded her in death. Nitchia peacefully departed this life on July 3, 2025.
The eldest of five siblings, Nitchia, blossomed into a bright and articulate young woman. She received her early education at St. Anne’s Catholic School and later graduated from Washington Irving High School. Always seeking growth, she pursued college studies to continue her educational journey.
Nitchia’s professional path reflected both her creativity and dedication to service. She began her career with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, embracing the arts and community spirit. She later joined the New York City Police Department as a Receptionist at the 6th Precinct. Her journey continued in the Human Resources Administration, where she worked in the Fraud Division, earning the admiration and respect of colleagues across the city before retiring.
Outside of work, Nitchia enjoyed life’s simple pleasures—shopping, swimming, and indulging in seafood on City Island, which was her favorite escape. But above all, she treasured time with her family. Her warmth and joy lit up every room, every celebration, every gathering.
In her teenage years, Nitchia met the late Obey Wilson, with whom she shared the blessing of two beautiful children, Quansa and Yazmine. She was also predeceased by her longtime partner, Jesse “Jay” Jones.” Through every chapter of life, Nitchia’s love and devotion were a guiding force for her children, grandchildren, siblings, and the many friends who were drawn to her spirit.
She leaves to cherish her memory: beloved children, Quansa “Chu Chu” Murray and Yazmine “Meena” Wilson; devoted father, John Murray; stepmother, Cheryl Diane Murray; siblings, Catrina, Prettina, Chris, and Shon Murray; adored grandchildren, Qyansa, Brielle, and Chloe Murray—especially Chloe, her “best friend”, and a loving host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
Nitchia’s life was a shining example of strength, faith, and compassion. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. The Jefferson Houses community, especially during this year’s Jefferson Day, will feel the void, but her spirit will live on, watching over those she loved so dearly. Her legacy is etched in the hearts of many. Rest in peace, Nitchia. You will never be forgotten.
