Wilbert Allen Williams, affectionately known as “Willie” or “Jr.,” was born on July 18, 1953, and
passed away peacefully on Friday, November 1, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family. He was
a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, whose love and dedication to his
family were the cornerstones of his life. Willie’s warmth, wisdom, and commitment to creating a
life filled with opportunity for his family followed the legacy set by his parents, Mary and his
namesake, Wilbert Sr. After Willie graduated from Brandeis High School during which he achieved his High School Diploma with outstanding awards, strong charity service and many basketball trophies, Willie proudly dedicated 44 and a half years to Columbia University, where he found not only his
professional purpose but also the love of his life, Patricia Williams. Together, they built a
beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering commitment. They raised three
children—Felicia, Chauncey, and Michael—who were the pride of his life, and he cherished his
four grandchildren, Janiyah, Nyheem, Kasheem, and Matthew. Willie was also a devoted brother
to Robert Williams and shared a special bond with his late sister, Ella Mae Williams.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Willie found in sports a reflection of life’s challenges. His love for
basketball, boxing, football, baseball, and swimming wasn’t just a pastime but a source of
resilience, mental toughness, and camaraderie. He passed these values and passions on to his
children and grandchildren, encouraging them to face life’s hurdles with the same spirit.
“Knowledge is Power” was one of Willie’s guiding beliefs. An avid reader and lifelong learner, he
rarely missed a day without immersing himself in a book, newspaper, or magazine. His
enthusiasm for learning and intellectual curiosity was infectious; he was always eager to share
insights and engage in meaningful discussions.
Willie’s empathy extended to all walks of life; he would set aside anything to help someone or
just listen. As he grew older, he embraced change and adapted with a forward-thinking mindset,
balancing the wisdom of his years with an openness to new ideas.
Willie’s love extended to animals as well, especially his cherished dogs over the years—Ebony,
Blitz, Chance, and, most recently, Kobe, whom he and his son Michael adopted together.
Willie leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and a generous heart. He found joy in nature
and adventure, creating cherished memories on family vacations and outdoor excursions that
strengthened their bonds. His warmth, humor, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who
had the honor of knowing him.
